MA VISTAs Gather for Opening Day

November 7, 2017

This past Friday, November 3rd, our Massachusetts-based VISTAs had the opportunity to come together alongside other AmeriCorps programs thanks to Massachusetts Service Alliance’s annual Opening Day event held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. Similar events were held in both Rhode Island and Connecticut during the month of October. Every year, Opening Day provides AmeriCorps members with the chance to connect with people in other programs, share a bit about the work that they are doing in their communities, and take the Pledge to Serve.

This year, Campus Compact for Southern New England was represented by Lauren Dybel, who is currently doing her year of service at Mount Ida College in Newton, MA. Lauren was one of the few individuals who addressed the crowd of nearly 1,000 AmeriCorps members. The program also included special remarks from Secretary Rosalin Acosta of the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, Dr. Tommy Chang, Superintendent of Boston Public Schools, U.S. District Judge Leo T. Sorokiand, and Tim Noelker, General Counsel for the Corporation for National and Community Service. Each delivered inspiring insights into their career paths and their appreciation for the work that AmeriCorps members do each and every year.

Following the ceremony, pledge, and a light lunch, VISTAs came back to the main office where VISTA Leaders facilitated small and large group discussions that offered VISTAs the opportunity to reflect on their service thus far and connect as a Corps.
