Service Learning and Civic Engagement at Community Colleges: Part Two
November 30, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
The Connecticut Center for Teaching Pathways is partnering with Campus Compact for Southern New England by opening participation to CCSNE member campuses for their Road to Teaching Success program. The program is traditionally open to all faculty and staff in the Connecticut Community College system and is especially directed to faculty within their first three years of full-time employment.
The three-part workshop series, Service Learning & Civic Engagement at Community Colleges, will focus on teaching strategies and innovative learning opportunities within service learning and community engagement, specifically within community colleges. The workshops will be explicitly didactic in nature: that is, workshops teach participants specific concepts and techniques, and focus on practical implementation in the college classroom.
The second workshop is titled Planning for Service Learning (SL) and Civic Engagement (CE): The Nuts and Bolts. This workshop will compliment October’s workshop, but is also a stand-alone event. In this workshop, attendees will participate in active breakouts throughout the event, analyzing real world SL and CE case studies using tools from Campus Compact. From these breakouts, participants will become familiar with their own campuses and system policies and procedures, as well as community norms to consider when creating their own SL/CE project. Attendees will also identify the practical considerations of working with one or more community partners in the region.
